Blue Envelope Give Campaign

On November 12th, 2025, our PTA will kick off its annual Blue Envelope Direct Give Campaign!!!

At Fairmount Park we keep our fundraising simple and straightforward. Instead of multiple asks (auctions, fun-runs etc..), our PTA encourages a once per year donation. This year we are looking to raise $100,000 so we can invest $300 per student at Fairmount Park next year. We know that different families have different financial situations and encourage you to donate the amount that feels right for your family. If you can, please consider giving more to support a family who can’t afford as large of a contribution.  We ask that each student return the Blue Envelope, even if you’re not able to donate. Every year we see donations range from $0 to generous amounts that support multiple students. 100% participation is an important goal! Please note any donation amount can be broken into monthly payments by using PayPal.

We know this year’s per student ask is BIG. But Seattle Public Schools’ ongoing budget crisis means our school continues to get less funding and our PTA has to do more just to maintain the staff and services Fairmount Park students need to thrive.

As a thank you for your participation, each student who returns their blue envelope receives a sticker.  Each classroom that returns their envelopes with or without money receives a Cookie Party (allergy free options available).

What does my donation support?

Washington state schools are critically underfunded. This year the PTA is investing over $100,000 at Fairmount Park including:

  • $58,000 for additional math and reading instructional support to help offset district staff cuts
  • $23,000 for Choir and 4th & 5th Grade Instrumental Program
  • $12,000 Specialist Teachers Grants (Art, Music, Library, PE)
  • $11,000 Classroom Teacher Grants
  • $10,000 Food Support Program
  • $5,000 School Assemblies
  • $5,000 PTA Sponsored School Events
  • $5,000 Enrichment Scholarships

We also support Equity Events like the Diversity and Including Night, cover School Supplies for families who can’t donate, provide scholarships for Field Trips, Salmon in the Schools (new this year!) and sponsor Teacher Appreciation Week.

Frequent Asked Questions

Why Do PTAs Fundraise at All?

PTAs shouldn’t need to be fundraising for school staff and programs! The state should fully fund public education, the “paramount duty” of our State Constitution. But the reality is Washington state chronically underfunds education and the SPS budget situation keeps getting worse each year.

1) McCleary, a 2012 Washington State Supreme Court case meant to address historic underfunding of rural districts, has over-corrected things such that urban districts like Seattle are not getting their fair share of education dollars. Especially given the cost of living crisis in Seattle, it simply costs more for our teachers to live here and more for us to fund their salaries and we are not getting this funding from the state.

2) As part of McCleary, the state caps the amount of funding school districts can raise in local levies. Seattle voters have generously approved property tax levies in excess of this amount that the state won’t let the district collect!

3) Education funding as a % of overall state funding has decreased from approximately 50% to 42% in recent years. Put another way, the state is underfunding education by approximately $4 billion a year.

4) To limit state funding on education the state arbitrarily caps the % of special education services it will fund to 10% of the student population. But in Seattle the special education population is more like 14% – and this “extra” 4% of students are morally, ethically and legally entitled to receive the special education services they need. This creates a big hole in SPS’s budget.

Why Are you Asking for So Much?

Faced with financial scarcity, the district has to decide where to deploy its too limited funds. Sensibly, there is an equity-tiering model to funding, and schools deemed less in need both because of the socio economic background of the students and because of test scores, get less funding.

Fairmount Park continues to be in the bottom 25% of SPS elementary schools in terms of funding per student. And this school year we lost another classroom teaching position and desperately needed instructional assistant time. Thanks to your donations last year, the PTA was able to step up and fund additional math and reading support staff to help offset these losses.

We are also down to .5 Music and .5 Art staff positions. The PTA provides additional funds for the Art program, funds Music teacher time for choir, and fully funds the Instrumental Music Program that 90% of our 4th and 5th graders participate in.

Additionally, the PTA continues to provide funding for the Library, Art, PE, Music programs; pays for school supplies and food for families who need support; provides grants for each classroom teacher; and supports assemblies, school events, and the afterschool enrichment program.

What Do I Do With My Blue Envelope?

Our goal is for every family to return their blue envelopes regardless of the level of giving. Every year we see individual donations range from $0 to thousands. 100% participation is the goal! Please complete the enclosed response form and return it in the blue envelope to your child’s homeroom teacher. Even if you donate online, or are choosing not to donate at all, please return the response form and blue envelope for each child you have at Fairmount Park.

When is the deadline?

Response forms and blue envelopes should be returned to your student’s homeroom teacher by Friday, November 21th. Online giving will run through Sunday November 30th at 2025 Blue Envelope Direct Give.
